Early Thursday morning, an eager group of incoming Georgia Southern freshman traveled downtown to begin the renovation process on one of our Homes For Heroes. Homes For Heroes is a project to encourage home ownership in Downtown Statesboro. These homes will be renovated and sold to the heroes of our community including firemen, police men, EMTs, and more.
BUILD is a program through the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement at the university. This program offers incoming freshman students and opportunity to build on their leadership skills before they even start their first official day of college. Along with fostering leadership skills, BUILD also introduces students to different community partners within the university and Statesboro community. Students have the opportunity to bond with other freshman and participate in service projects with organizations like the Boys & Girls Club and Downtown Statesboro Development Authority.
During their service, the BUILD students started clean up both inside and outside of the house. Some students helped landscape, cut down trees, and trim plant overgrowth. Others assisted in cleaning the porch, removing broken glass from windows, and trash clean up. Although it was a hot Statesboro day, the students worked tirelessly to help kickstart this cleanup process. A combination of high hopes, positive attitudes, and a little bit of GoPro Camera fun made the day fly by.
We look forward to seeing how these fantastic students will continue to help make Statesboro an even better community!
